Brooklyn Bold meets Catskill Cool

Guest Post by Monica Relyea of Monica Relyea Events

Upstate New York has been historically known for its untouched beauty, tranquility and sense of adventure.  With its mountainous terrain, valleys, lakes and streams it certainly attracts a person who enjoys being close to nature and living a more sustainable unplugged lifestyle.  The Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains are historically known as a haven not only for nature seekers but artists, musicians and writers. It's no wonder this region was an attraction to Emmy Award winning Talk Stoop host Cat Greenleaf and her producer husband Mike Rey.

These Brooklynites lead a very jam-packed lifestyle with TV shows and demanding jobs, two energetic sons and 3 adorable dogs. They decided to change up their stoop view in Brooklyn for a view of a pond in the mountains.  After hosting many weekend retreats & festive parties with friends, they now share their dream location with others for select dates.

The Catskill Mountain House is a quirky blend of "Brooklyn meets the Catskills," where rustic barns and clean line vintage Airstreams reside, decorated with vintage finds and 70’s throw-back references (a Fonz poster and vintage record players). The site is situated high with clear views of amazing Catskill peaks.  Once we saw the property we couldn't wait to set the stage for the trendy couple seeking an intimate yet totally hip, organic location.

More and more couples are seeking off the grid, non traditional venues - locations where they can gather with their besties, walk outside and get married surrounded by untamed perfection.  The Catskill Mountain House offers up this natural option with its rustic backdrop and eccentric details.  The grounds and buildings are filled with quirky pieces but still evokes a timeless comfortable feel. We loved it from the moment we walked in.

Working closely with Alicia King Photography and North Country Vintage Rentals, we developed a plan to work with the existing pieces and let the stunning views remain the main focus, while bringing in modern touches and vintage, kitschy and offbeat pieces for that surprise element.  Starting with a hand drawn invite by Coppola Creative, the tone was set for a relaxed affair any hipster would want to attend and the additional custom signage added more fun around every corner. Cat and Mike loved Megan of Coppola Creative's designs so much they used her for the new TCMH logo!

Our bride's gown needed to be clean, fitted and chic. We chose a Halston inspired dress from Revolve.  The caped back and strong lines spoke volumes among the vintage touches.  Peacock chunky strap shoes added that pop of unexpected color.  Elle Beauty Bar kept hair slicked back and lips red against our bride's porcelain skin.  A vintage cameo ring from Zimmer Brothers Jewelers was a nice twist to the traditional diamond. We dressed our groom in a classic navy suit with a floral tie as a nod to the surroundings. With nature as the backdrop, minimal bold florals were chosen.  Our bride's bouquet from Catskill Weddings incorporated tropical greenery and bright colors which complemented our look.

The event barn is rustic in nature but modern in color.  Dark grey sideboard with white trim is striking under the tree lines.  The all white interior is a clean palette for anyone's touch.  North Country Vintage Rentals brought the kitsch to the styling and slayed it with all the right pieces. They set the space with vintage Stoneware, mismatched napkins and candlesticks, bright rainbow colored goblets and 60’s salt & pepper shakers. All you needed to do was sit back and enjoy the fun night. A gold pineapple cake from Super Cakes was the showstopper.  Perfectly layered and totally edible, this cake added all the glam we needed.

To add more unconventional touches, we scattered pink flamingos around the property. Why not right?? The bright pink girls fit right in with the Catskill Mountain woods, silver Airstreams and pineapple string lights!!  And lets talk about those Airstreams for a sec!  Funky sophistication meets glamping couture in the mountains!  YAY! We threw in all those words!!

The grounds are filled with vintage pieces used in unconventional ways.  A retired flatbed truck with Summer wildflowers made for the perfect photo op and Cat’s dog Molly showed us how she struts her stuff by making random appearances with our couple throughout the day. With so much going on visually throughout the property, nothing compares to the ridiculous views and tranquil pond.  Daybeds around the pond provide a romantic place to cuddle up and get lost in the stunner views. Don't lie down for too long.  You’ll never want to leave the beautiful Catskill Mountain House.
